We Asked ChatGPT to Rank Indian Jewellery Brands. Our Client Showed Up.

There's a difference between telling a brand its AEO is working and having a large language model prove it unprompted, in a context that has nothing to do with a pitch deck.

We ran that test ourselves recently. We asked ChatGPT the same question ten different ways "What's the best Indian jewellery brand?" and tallied every response to see which names came up most often. The result was a ranked list of the ten most-mentioned Indian jewellery brands, built from repeated model outputs rather than a single lucky answer.

Tanishq, Kalyan Jewellers, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, CaratLane, PNG Jewellers, Joyalukkas, Senco Gold & Diamonds, and Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri heritage names, most of them decades old, several with hundreds of stores nationwide. And in that list: Lucira Jewelry, a brand whose AISEO we handled at NOIR & BLANCO

We're not neutral observers here, so it's worth being upfront about that. We didn't run this test to find Lucira on the list; we ran it because we wanted real data on how models rank a category we work in, and Lucira showing up was the result, not the premise. That placement is worth sitting with for a moment, because of what the list is actually measuring.

The list isn't measuring ad spend or domain age

Every other name on it built recognition over years, sometimes generations, of retail presence and brand advertising. Lucira didn't have that runway. What it had was a body of content structured so that a model answering "best Indian jewellery brand" in ten different ways could repeatedly retrieve it, extract a claim from it, and cite it alongside brands with a decades-long head start.

That's the part traditional SEO reporting doesn't capture. A keyword ranking tells you where a page sits in a list of blue links. It says nothing about whether an AI system trusts a brand enough to name it in a synthesised answer, next to competitors ten times its size. This experiment measured the second thing, not the first.

What the test confirmed

We drew three conclusions from the exercise, and they align with what we see while doing this work for Shopify brands day to day.

Trust beats trendiness. Legacy brands consistently outranked newer direct-to-consumer names. That's a reasonable finding if you think about what a model is actually doing when it answers a query like this  it isn't picking a favorite, it's assembling the most defensible answer from whatever content gave it clear, quotable, verifiable claims to work with. Heritage alone doesn't produce that; structured content does, and heritage brands have historically produced more of it simply by having more time and more written-about history.

Reputation signals matter more than volume. We tracked heritage, nationwide presence, transparent quality standards, and consumer recognition as the deciding factors. Every one of those is something a model has to infer from content, not just from a domain's age. A page that states its quality standards in plain, extractable language gives a model something to cite. A page that gestures at trustworthiness without ever stating a checkable fact gives it nothing to work with.

Prompt wording changes the ranking, but a core group holds steady. Asking for "luxury," "bridal," "everyday wear," or "best value" shifted the exact order, but the same names kept reappearing across variations. That's the signature of content built around distinct, well-defined claims rather than one all-purpose pitch different questions pull different pages, and a brand only survives that rotation if it has coverage across the actual questions people ask, not just the one it wishes they'd ask.

The takeaway for Shopify brands watching this shift

None of this is really about jewellery. It's about what happens when a category has enough retrieval-friendly content that a model can compare brands on claims instead of on marketing copy. That's already true for Indian jewellery. It's becoming true for every category with enough AI search volume to matter, and most Shopify brands haven't structured a single page with that in mind.

The brands that show up on lists like this aren't the ones spending the most. They're the ones that gave a model something specific enough to repeat. Lucira sitting next to Tanishq and Malabar Gold & Diamonds isn't a fluke; it's what AEO work looks like when it's done properly and a large enough sample size catches it.

If you run a Shopify store and you're still measuring visibility by keyword rank, this is a preview of the report you'll eventually need to explain to your board: not where you rank, but whether you get mentioned at all.
