The AI commerce conversation is changing faster than most eCommerce teams realise.
Anthropic recently released open source commerce agent blueprints that allow businesses to build shopping and merchant agents using Claude. The important part isn't simply that Anthropic launched another AI commerce product.
The bigger story is this:
The AI agent itself is becoming a commodity.
And when that happens, the competitive advantage moves somewhere else.
For Shopify merchants, that "somewhere else" is increasingly the quality of their product data, commerce infrastructure, integrations, content and ability to be understood by AI systems.
That changes how brands should think about AI commerce.
The Agent Is No Longer the Moat
A year ago, having an AI shopping assistant could have been a differentiator.
Today, the technology required to build one is becoming increasingly accessible.
Open source frameworks, APIs and pre built commerce tools are reducing the technical barrier to launching an agent.
That means simply saying:
"We have an AI shopping agent."
will not be enough for long.
The real question becomes:
What can your agent actually understand, access and execute?
Can it understand your entire catalogue?
Can it distinguish between similar products?
Can it understand variants, materials, sizes, colours and availability?
Can it access real time inventory?
Can it understand your return policy?
Can it recommend the right product based on a customer's intent?
Can it add the product to a cart?
Can it complete the transaction?
And perhaps most importantly:
Can another AI agent discover your products in the first place?
That is where the real challenge begins.
There Are Actually Three AI Commerce Problems
The industry often puts everything under the term "AI shopping."
But merchants should separate it into three different layers.
1. AI Discovery
A customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or another AI platform:
"Find me a minimalist gold necklace under ₹50,000 from a reputable jewellery brand."
The AI searches, understands different brands and products, compares options and makes recommendations.
Your store needs to be discoverable and recommendable.
This is where GEO, AEO, entity optimisation and AI readable content become important.
2. AI Assisted Shopping
The customer is already on your website.
Instead of navigating dozens of collection pages, they can ask:
"I need a lightweight diamond necklace for a wedding."
The AI assistant helps them find the right product.
This is closer to traditional CRO, but with an AI interface sitting between the customer and the catalogue.
3. AI Powered Merchant Operations
This is where merchant agents become particularly interesting.
An agent can potentially monitor products, inventory, pricing and sales activity and help merchants decide what action to take.
For example:
"Which products are running low?"
"Which products haven't sold in the last 30 days?"
"Which products should we promote this weekend?"
"Create a restock recommendation."
The interface changes.
But the underlying requirement remains the same:
The agent needs reliable commerce data.
Your Product Catalogue Is Becoming an AI Interface
This is the part I think Shopify merchants should pay the most attention to.
For years, product data was primarily written for:
Google
shoppers
marketplaces
internal merchandising teams
Now there is another consumer of that information:
AI agents.
An AI system needs more than a product title and a nice photograph.
It needs context.
For a jewellery brand, for example, the system may need to understand:
product type
metal
gemstone
carat
dimensions
weight
colour
occasion
style
price
availability
delivery information
return policy
certifications
brand positioning
related products
The better structured this information is, the easier it becomes for an AI system to understand the catalogue.
This is why I believe:
Product information architecture will become one of the most important parts of AI commerce.
The Hidden Cost Isn't the Agent
This brings us back to Anthropic.
If the software required to build an agent becomes free or significantly cheaper, merchants might assume that AI commerce also becomes cheap.
It doesn't.
The expensive part moves downstream.
Businesses still need to invest in:
Data
Product information has to be accurate, complete and structured.
Integrations
The agent needs access to Shopify, inventory, catalogue, customer and order systems.
Infrastructure
Real time systems need to work reliably when customers actually use them.
AI Usage
The software may be open source, but model inference and API usage are not necessarily free.
Evaluation
You need to know whether the agent is making good recommendations and giving accurate answers.
Human Oversight
What happens when the agent recommends the wrong product, misunderstands a customer's requirement or creates an incorrect promotion?
Security
An agent that can take actions inside your commerce stack needs carefully defined permissions.
So the cost doesn't disappear.
It moves from building the agent to making the business agent ready.
This Is Where Shopify Merchants Have an Advantage
Shopify merchants already have something incredibly valuable:
A structured commerce system.
Products, variants, inventory, pricing, collections, customer data and orders already exist inside the Shopify ecosystem.
The opportunity is to make that infrastructure increasingly accessible to AI systems.
But simply being on Shopify doesn't automatically make a brand AI ready.
A store can have beautiful design and still have poor machine readable product information.
It can rank on Google and still have weak visibility inside generative search.
It can have hundreds of products and still fail to communicate why one product is different from another.
This is where the next layer of eCommerce optimisation comes in.
SEO Is Not Going Away. It Is Expanding.
There is a tendency to frame AI search as:
SEO vs AI.
I don't think that's the right way to look at it.
Search optimisation is expanding.
Traditional SEO helps search engines understand your website.
AEO helps your content answer questions.
GEO focuses on visibility across generative search and AI platforms.
Entity optimisation helps machines understand the relationships between your brand, products, people, categories and concepts.
And agentic commerce adds another layer:
Can an AI system actually use your commerce infrastructure?
These aren't isolated disciplines.
They are becoming parts of the same system.
The New Funnel Is Different
The traditional eCommerce journey looks something like:
Google → Website → Collection → Product → Cart → Checkout
The emerging AI commerce journey could look more like:
Customer intent → AI understanding → Product discovery → Product comparison → Recommendation → Commerce action
The website may still exist.
The checkout may still exist.
Shopify may still power the store.
But the interface between the customer and the catalogue is changing.
That is the important part.
What Happens to the Shopify Storefront?
I don't think the storefront disappears.
But its role may change.
Your website will increasingly serve two audiences:
Humans and machines.
Humans care about:
visual experience
trust
storytelling
navigation
usability
social proof
Machines care about:
structured information
relationships
context
accuracy
availability
consistency
accessibility
The best Shopify stores will need to satisfy both.
This is especially important for luxury and jewellery brands.
A beautiful product page is not enough.
The page needs to communicate what the product is, who it is for, why it is different, how it relates to other products and when it should be recommended.
The Biggest Opportunity for Jewellery Brands
Jewellery is particularly interesting because purchasing decisions are highly contextual.
Customers don't simply search for:
"gold necklace."
They search for intent.
Something like:
"A delicate necklace for a wedding guest."
Or:
"A minimalist diamond ring for an engagement."
Or:
"Everyday earrings under ₹30,000."
AI systems are naturally good at understanding this type of conversational intent.
That creates a major opportunity for jewellery brands.
But it also creates a major risk.
If your product information doesn't clearly communicate those attributes, another brand may become the recommendation.
The battle may no longer be for position #1 on Google.
It may increasingly be for:
"Which brand does the AI recommend?"
What Shopify Merchants Should Do Now
You don't need to build an AI agent tomorrow.
Instead, start by making your commerce infrastructure ready for agents.
1. Clean Your Product Data
Make product titles, descriptions, attributes and variants consistent.
2. Build Deeper Product Context
Don't describe only what the product is.
Explain who it is for, when it should be used and how it differs from alternatives.
3. Strengthen Your Entities
Make your brand, founders, collections, products and categories understandable as connected entities.
4. Optimise for AI Discovery
Start monitoring how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI platforms describe and recommend your brand.
5. Improve Structured Data
Make it easier for machines to understand products, prices, availability, reviews and other important information.
6. Prepare Your Shopify Infrastructure
Your catalogue, inventory, cart and checkout should be ready to interact with new AI commerce interfaces.
7. Start Measuring AI Visibility
Traditional rankings aren't enough anymore.
Ask:
When customers ask AI platforms questions relevant to my category, does my brand appear?
And when it appears:
Is it being recommended for the right reasons?
The Next Competitive Advantage
The biggest mistake merchants can make is thinking that the AI agent is the product.
It isn't.
The agent is the interface.
The underlying commerce infrastructure is the product.
Your catalogue.
Your product data.
Your brand entity.
Your inventory.
Your pricing.
Your content.
Your policies.
Your Shopify infrastructure.
Your ability to connect all of it.
That's what makes an AI agent useful.
And as more companies gain access to similar AI capabilities, those underlying assets become increasingly important.
The AI Commerce Race Has Changed
Anthropic making commerce agents accessible is not just another AI announcement.
It is another signal that the barrier to building AI powered commerce experiences is falling.
And when technology becomes easier to access, differentiation moves upstream.
For Shopify brands, that means the question isn't:
"Should we build an AI shopping agent?"
The better question is:
"If an AI agent wanted to sell our products tomorrow, would our commerce infrastructure be ready?"
If the answer is no, that's where the work should begin.
Because the future of AI commerce may not belong to the brands with the smartest agents.
It may belong to the brands whose products are easiest for agents to understand, trust, recommend and buy.
Final Thought
The shopping agent is becoming a commodity.
AI ready commerce infrastructure isn't.
That is the opportunity Shopify merchants should be preparing for now.
NOIR & BLANCO helps Shopify and eCommerce brands prepare for this shift through Shopify development, SEO, GEO, AEO, AI search visibility and performance marketing.
