How To Get Featured in the AEO Listicles That AI Actually Cites

A five step framework for getting your brand into the "best of" articles that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews pull from when someone asks for a recommendation.

Ask an AI assistant to recommend a brand and watch what it does. It rarely invents an opinion from nothing. It reaches for the pages that already contain a considered, comparative answer, and more often than not, those pages are listicles. "Best luxury jewellery brands in India." "Top sustainable clothing labels." "Best Shopify agencies for premium brands."

These roundups have become the raw material of AI recommendations. If your brand appears in the ones AI models trust, you show up in the answer. If it doesn't, you are invisible at exactly the moment a customer is asking to be told what to buy.

This is a very different game from ranking a page on your own website. You are not optimizing something you control. You are working to be mentioned somewhere else, on pages you do not own, in a context you can only influence. That makes it harder, slower, and considerably more valuable when it works.

Here is the framework we use at NOIR & BLANCO, in five steps.

Step 1: Nail Down Your Positioning

Everything downstream fails if this step is vague.

An AI system decides whether to include your brand in an answer by matching a specific query intent to a clear description of what you are. "A premium fashion brand" matches nothing in particular. "A Mumbai based label making hand embroidered occasion wear for Indian weddings, priced between X and Y" matches dozens of highly specific queries.

Specificity is what gets you cited. Generic positioning is what gets you skipped.

What to define before you do anything else:

  • Category. The exact noun a customer would use, not the one your brand deck uses. Not "curated lifestyle objects." Say "home fragrance" or "leather bags."
  • Segment and price tier. Entry luxury, mid luxury, true luxury, accessible premium. AI answers are constantly filtering by budget because users ask about budget.
  • Geography. Where you sell, where you ship, where you are based. A huge share of commercial AI queries carry a location.
  • The differentiator that survives a fact check. Not "quality craftsmanship." Something verifiable: a material, a technique, a certification, a manufacturing origin, a founder credential, a first in market claim.
  • Who it is for and who it is not for. Exclusions are surprisingly powerful. A model that understands you are not for everyone can place you accurately.

Write this as a single paragraph of about eighty words, in plain language, and use exactly that language everywhere. Your homepage, your about page, your founder bios, your LinkedIn, your press kit, your Crunchbase entry, your Shopify meta descriptions. Consistency across sources is how an entity becomes legible to a model. Contradictory descriptions across your own properties are one of the most common reasons a brand fails to get picked up.

Step 2: Identify Your Most Important Keywords

In AEO, "keyword" is the wrong word for what you are actually chasing. You are chasing prompts. Full sentences that a real buyer types into an assistant.

Build a list of thirty to fifty of them. They tend to fall into recognisable shapes:

  • Best of. "Best lab grown diamond brands in India"
  • Comparison. "Brand A vs Brand B for everyday wear"
  • Constraint driven. "Sustainable ethnic wear under 15000"
  • Occasion driven. "What to gift for a first anniversary"
  • Problem driven. "Jewellery that doesn't tarnish in humid weather"
  • Alternatives. "Alternatives to Brand X for a smaller budget"

Then do the part most brands skip: run every prompt through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews yourself, and record what comes back. Which brands are named. In what order. And crucially, which URLs are cited underneath.

That citation list is your target list. You have just replaced guesswork with the actual set of pages influencing the answers in your category.

Prioritise ruthlessly. A prompt is worth pursuing when it sits close to purchase intent, when your brand is a legitimate fit for the answer, and when the citations behind it look reachable. A prompt where three global giants dominate every answer is not where a young brand should spend its first six months.

Step 3: Find Which Listicles Are Already Getting Cited

Now analyse the pages themselves, because not all listicles carry the same weight.

For each cited URL, note:

  • The publication and its authority in your category. A niche trade publication with genuine domain expertise often outperforms a large general interest site.
  • Freshness. Look for a visible last updated date. Pages that are actively maintained get cited far more consistently than ones that have sat untouched since 2022.
  • Structure. The listicles that get quoted heavily tend to share a shape: a clear heading per brand, a one line summary, consistent attributes for every entry such as price range, materials, shipping, and standout product, plus a short verdict. That structure is easy for a model to extract cleanly.
  • Inclusion criteria. Is it editorially chosen, submission based, affiliate driven, or paid? This determines your approach entirely.
  • How many of your competitors are already there. A list where four of your five direct comparisons appear and you don't is your highest priority target.

Group the results into three buckets. Lists you could realistically join within a quarter. Lists that need a longer authority build first. And lists that are paid placements, which you should evaluate on commercial merit rather than treating as SEO.

One more thing to check: whether the same handful of pages keeps appearing across many different prompts. In most categories, a small cluster of pages does disproportionate work. That cluster is where your effort belongs.

Step 4: Reach Out To Those Publications

This is a digital PR motion, not a link building one, and the distinction matters. You are not asking for a link. You are offering an editor the specific material they need to add a credible entry.

What makes an editor say yes:

Make inclusion nearly effortless. Send a short, factual brand block that matches the format of their existing entries. Founded year, category, price range, materials or process, where you ship, what makes you different in one sentence, two or three signature products with links, and high resolution imagery with clear usage rights.

Give them a reason your entry improves the piece. Editors do not update lists as a favour. They update them when there is a gap. "Your roundup covers ten brands but none of them ship internationally, and we do" is a reason. "We would love to be considered" is not.

Lead with proof rather than adjectives. Stockists, awards, notable collaborations, press already earned, verifiable production details, review volume. Every unverifiable superlative you include lowers your credibility for the ones that are true.

Keep it short. Six sentences and an attached fact sheet beats a three paragraph pitch.

A template that works:

Subject: Addition for your [year] guide to [category]

Hi [name],

I read your guide to [exact article title]. It is one of the few that actually covers [specific thing the piece does well].

I noticed the list doesn't currently include a brand in [specific gap: a price band, a technique, a region, a product type]. We are [brand], based in [city], making [precise description]. [One line of hard proof.]

I have attached a short fact sheet in the same format as your existing entries, plus press ready images, in case it is useful for your next update. Happy to answer anything or send samples.

Best, [name]

Also widen the definition of a target. Beyond publications, the pages that feed AI answers include Reddit threads, Quora answers, YouTube comparison videos with strong transcripts, industry association directories, marketplace category pages, and review platforms. Models draw from all of them. Reddit in particular carries real weight in a lot of consumer categories, though it punishes anything that smells like marketing, so participate honestly or stay out.

And build your own citable asset while you are at it. An original data point, a survey, a materials guide, or a genuinely useful buying guide gives other writers something to cite and gives models a reason to treat you as a source rather than only a product.

Step 5: Track What's Holding and What's New

AI visibility is not a launch. It moves week to week, because models are retrained, pages are updated, and competitors are doing exactly this work too.

Set up a simple tracking routine and stick to it:

  • Re run your prompt set on a fixed schedule. Monthly is the minimum. Fortnightly is better in a competitive category. Use a consistent method, log every result, and use clean sessions so personalisation does not distort what you see.
  • Record four things each time. Whether your brand was mentioned, its position in the list, which URL was cited alongside it, and which competitors appeared.
  • Watch the citation set, not just the mention. A drop in mentions is usually caused by a change upstream: a source page got updated, deranked, or replaced. Fix the source, not the symptom.
  • Track placements you have earned separately. A listicle you got into six months ago may have been rewritten without you. Placements decay. Someone has to check.
  • Connect it to outcomes. Referral traffic from AI platforms, assisted conversions, branded search lift, and direct traffic changes. Visibility that never produces demand is a vanity metric.

Expect a slow curve. From first outreach to a measurable change in AI answers, a realistic window is two to four months, sometimes longer. Models need to see updated sources, and editors update on their own schedules. Anyone promising you AI citations in a fortnight is either paying for placements or misreading their data.

The Mistakes That Cost Brands the Most Time

Chasing volume instead of relevance. Twenty placements in irrelevant roundups move nothing. Three placements in the pages that actually feed answers in your category change everything.

Inconsistent brand information across the web. If your founding year, category, and price positioning differ between your site, your LinkedIn, and an old press release, you are actively making yourself harder to understand. Audit and fix this before you pitch anyone.

Publishing your own "best brands" list with yourself at number one. It is transparent, it is rarely cited, and it burns credibility with the editors you are about to email.

Treating this as an SEO task. The skills that win here are editorial and relationship driven. It sits closer to PR than to technical optimization, even though the outcome is measured in search visibility.

Ignoring the product data underneath. When a model does surface your brand, the next thing it needs is accurate product information: attributes, pricing, availability, materials, shipping, policies. Getting cited and then presenting an incoherent catalogue wastes the citation. AI visibility and product data quality are the same project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get featured in AEO listicles?

Typically two to four months from outreach to a visible shift in AI answers. Getting the placement itself can happen in weeks. The lag comes from models needing to reflect the updated source.

Do paid placements work for AI visibility?

Sometimes, if the publication has genuine authority and the page is genuinely maintained. Judge it as a media buy on the publication's merits, not as a guaranteed AI citation. Low quality paid listicle networks are largely a waste.

Which matters more, being mentioned or being cited?

Both, differently. A citation means a page you appear on is being used as a source. A mention means your brand name reaches the user. The mention drives demand, so it is what you optimise for, but citations are the mechanism.

Can a new brand compete for these placements?

Yes, in narrow segments. A new brand rarely wins "best luxury handbags" but can absolutely win "best vegetable tanned leather bags made in India." Specificity beats budget at the start.

Does this replace traditional SEO?

No. Technical foundations, site structure, and content quality still underpin everything, including how AI systems evaluate your brand. This is an additional layer, not a substitute.

The Underlying Point

The shift here is bigger than a tactic. For twenty years, digital visibility meant getting your own page to rank. Increasingly, it means being the brand that other credible sources describe accurately and often enough that an AI system is confident recommending you.

That makes brand authority a technical asset. It means your product data, your positioning language, your press footprint, and your review presence are all inputs into the same system. And it means the brands that build a coherent, consistent, verifiable presence across the web will keep compounding an advantage over the ones optimising a single website in isolation.
